piratinera guianensis
Snakewood, a member of the moraceae, or mulberry family is an incredibly beautiful wood available almost exclusively from Suriname, South America. It is deep red in color and changes to reddish brown, with a mottled finish, when exposed to air. It has interlocking grain and a moderate to fine texture.
Snakewood is very dense… the specific gravity is around 1.2, making it one of the world’s hardest woods.
Snakewood is prone to checking if left unsealed and it is common to find Snakewood with minute hairline cracks. Fortunately, if cracks do occur, they can be hidden completely if caught early.
